The "Portuguese guitar" is a traditional Portuguese instrument, strongly associated with "fado". It has a pear-shaped body, twelve metal strings arranged in six pairs, and a bright, melancholic sound. It is usually played with a small pick and plays an essential role in accompanying fado singers.
