In 1870, the group launched its two main products: Ginger Ale (with ginger) and Indian Tonic2. Indian Tonic is a tonic water, containing extracts of quinine and bitter orange which give the drink a bitter taste which has since been associated with the brand Schweppes. The Indian Tonic is inspired by the custom of the British colonists stationed in India, who regularly drank beverages containing quinine to guard against malaria2 (prophylactic use). It was however after the Second World War that the Indian Tonic was widely distributed2.
