Sherdor Madrasa – Historical Architecture

Sherdor Madrasa, built between 1619 and 1636 by the ruler Yalangtush Bakhodir, is one of the masterpieces of the Registan ensemble in Samarkand. It represents the mature style of the 17th-century Bukhara architectural school.

Key Architectural Features:

Layout: The madrasa follows a traditional four-iwan courtyard plan, with a large central courtyard surrounded by two-story student cells (hujras).

Minarets: Two slender minarets flank the grand entrance portal, giving the building a balanced and majestic appearance.

Main Portal (Peshtaq): The portal is famous for its unique decoration featuring sun-faced tigers (sher) and deer — an unusual motif in Islamic architecture.

Decorations: Richly adorned with mosaic tiles, glazed ceramics, and geometric patterns in blue, gold, and white tones.

Materials: Built mainly with baked bricks and decorated with colorful tilework.
