KANSÓ
The word "kanso" is written with two kanji characters: kan (簡), meaning simplicity, and so (素), meaning unadorned. It can function both as a noun and as an adjective, serving as a reminder of the pursuit of simplicity. By shedding unnecessary clutter and discarding futile habits, and by ceasing to waste time on trivial matters, we begin to discern what is truly important to us.
Kanso is not merely a way of life; its principles also permeate Japanese art. A prime example is the rock garden: a few stones and raked sand.
